James Helbert Jr

We caught up with James Helbert Jr to talk about his music. At Indiy we champion musicians.

Let's get to it...

What do you enjoy most about being an independent musician?

The ability to be unique, God-fearing, and also being able to keep tradition alive with hip hop and R&B.

You know nowadays we look at rap artists and all they do is redundant lyrics all the time, without spreading any knowledge...

Or any thing that is based upon either love, serenity, care, honesty or pure-hearted, that can reach the soul of millions of people out there to be touched and changed their lives.

If we were to peek over your shoulder, what does your studio look like? What gear do you typically use?

I have my own setup...it's not professional but I do have a mic laptop and that's all I use!

The thing I use on my laptop is Magic music studio and for beat making I have Acid.

And then I have Sound Forge...I use this to create my Unique Style and passion about the history of me.

I've written for Chris Brown and many others!

When my heart was broken by a girl in 6th grade my bad teacher, Mr. Sorrell, was a famous jazz musician and then he became a teacher at my school. I learned many great things from him!

And I dedicated my English journal to him, for always leading me down the right path!

And it led me to write for many others that came out of the 90s R&B in the early 2000s and late 2000s of music.

Do you enjoy recording and production, or do you like performing live and promotion?

I like recording and production but I also would love to perform too and have a promotion!

I'm looking to...you know...gain music from other artists or inspiration from other artists that I think are very capable in audio in their lives.

And I think it's a good thing to collaborate with people who you think would have a chance to have the same type of style as you do.

How would you want people to describe your latest project in a tweet?

"Let's Dance, get a girl on the dance floor and grind it out! That's all I'm talking about...Let's Dance Again!"

Do you plan your music releases, or do you just finish a song and release it?

A little bit of both!

What can we expect from you within the next 6 months? Any releases planned? Future gigs?

You can expect more songs from me on Spotify and SoundCloud but about gigs...I have a guy, paid from SoundCloud and Spotify.

It made sense, in order to finance, to get a head start into performing in front of crowds and fans!

Are you planning any videos for your music? Are there any videos we need to know about!?

On my Instagram I have videos two that have me in there but then they're also hidden picture videos that mean a lot to me because it has things that go along with the song inside the video.

I don't think all videos need to show yourself but it also needs to show why the song was made of what it means behind the song.

Are there any collaborations, past or future, that you are excited about?

Well since I wrote for Chris Brown, I do have a song that we did that was from Legion Beats.

It hasn't been posted yet because of certain circumstances, but the producers I really want to work with and the artists, instrumentalists, and songwriters I want to work with are...

Dr. Dre, Eminem, Lloyd Banks, 50 Cent, Outkast, Jay-Z, Nas , F...

And hopefully, one of my favorite musicians from back in the day...Kenny G!

He can play the hell out the saxophone or the clarinet or any instrument you give them and he's very talented!

What inspires your creative process?

The love of women is what creates my process.

I think that you don't have to degrade women in order to get them to enjoy themselves, you can also do it by music and inspiring, instead of degrading all women.

What are your top three favorite albums of all time and why those albums?

My three favorite albums of all time are probably...

50 Cent - Get Rich Or Die Tryin'
Bizzy Bone - The Gift
And Eminem's - Encore.

Those three albums, to me, were more uplifting to my spirit than anything in my life!

They actually gave me a quality and sense of thinking that other people would be sincere.

Who makes up your existing creative team?
i.e. photographers, video directors, social media managers, paid media specialists, stylists, hair, and makeup…Name someone who you think deserves a special shout-out?

The people that I think are on my creative team that need the most shouting out for me is...

Gabe from Legion Beats Mike major Vidal Garcia June B Constantine MJ Maijla Phillip Valley and everybody from the legion beats team.

Where can we find you on social media?

You can find me on Instagram @OG.King.James
