We caught up with Retro Mafia to talk about his music. At Indiy we champion musicians.

Let's get to it...

What do you enjoy most about being an independent musician?

The chance to do something I love and share it with people that have similar dreams.

I love the idea that my music might one day impact someone’s life the way music has impacted mine.

If we were to peek over your shoulder, what does your studio look like? What gear do you typically use?

I’ve worked hard and managed to buy almost every major instrument...guitar, bass, drums!

I also have the vocal recording gear and space as well as lots of programs online.

I've always wanted to be able to make music fully by myself so I’ve learned instruments, production, singing, and engineering.

Do you enjoy recording and production, or do you like performing live and promotion?

I live for recording and producing and due to covid I haven’t been able to perform at a show.

It’s one of my dreams to be standing on a stage having people singing my song and I can’t wait for that to happen!

How would you want people to describe your latest project in a tweet?

My latest project was an experimental lofi song with cold, robotic vocals.

I would definitely love if someone saw the emotion and depth that's in the song and really noticed the original yet professional sound.

Do you plan your music releases, or do you just finish a song and release it?

I definitely plan my releases, despite the few times where I have made a song and then immediately published it.

What can we expect from you within the next 6 months? Any releases planned? Future gigs?

I have about 4 albums lined up for the first 6 months of 2021...all different genres and sounds.

I want to do this full time and hard work and dedication is the best way to do that. Once venues open again you can bet I will start looking for shows!

Are you planning any videos for your music? Are there any videos we need to know about!?

I just bought a new camera 3 days ago! And I'm excited to connect with other rappers and visual artists to make some cool videos!

Are there any collaborations, past or future, that you are excited about?

In the past we’ve worked with some talented individuals, but on our new Ep, I have over 10 features, while maintaining a dominant presence throughout.

Which artists inspire your creative process?

Listening to new artists and new genres has always given me bursts of influence, I love all the new sounds and ideas everyone has and it inspires me to make my own version.

What are your top three favorite albums of all time and why those albums?

Aries - Welcome Home...I love the diversity and originality but beautiful execution of melodies and new ideas while keeping the genres close to home.

What Could Possibly Go Wrong - Dominic Fike...I love Dom's style and ability to present relaxing, energetic, and beautiful songs that fit every occasion.

Instead of using samples, most have acoustic drums and guitars which really hits back to the 90s we all love, with a flare of modern music.

All Star - Contradash...I don’t think we’ll hear anything quite as original yet captivating as All Star.

His sound is unlike any other and yet it’s so amazingly written and produced that you can listen to it end to end and still want more.

Who makes up your existing creative team?
i.e. photographers, video directors, social media managers, paid media specialists, stylists, hair, and makeup…Name someone who you think deserves a special shout-out?

I have taken up the challenge of learning as many musical talents as I can, while my partner in many affairs, Rusty, has taken to a lot of graphic, visual, instrumental, and vocal talents.

We are a perfect power duo that thrives where the other is weak.
