Even as a new artist, your lawyer is one of the most important positions on your team. Some clients are locked into terrible deals simply because they signed their Recording or Management Contract without any Legal Representation (Many large labels will no longer allow this).

Recording Contracts can be 30-70 pages long, and with a Management Contract it’s not so much what it says, but the items that are non-specific that can really get you in trouble.

We’ve all heard horror stories from those who say that they got swindled by attorneys but even if that is the case- you have methods of recourse.

Your Attorney and Accountant (and Agent depending on which state you live in) are two of the only people on your team who will be licensed and regulated and therefore you can contact the board that oversees them if you have been legally or ethically wronged.

One key thing to keep in mind is that the attorney works for the party that is paying him/her. Their interaction with you should be professional, but at the end of the day they have a Fiduciary Duty to act in the best interest of their client. This is why you should always have your own Legal Representation.

If you’ve already been offered a deal many attorneys will represent you with no up-front cost. They’ll take their payment from the advance or other monies received once you sign. There is a multitude of options that you can work out with your lawyer- just make sure that you have one so that your interests are being looked after and represented.
