We caught up with Baraka The Mortician to talk about his music. At Indiy we champion musicians.
Let's get to it...
What I enjoy most about being an independent musician is the freedom and creativity that I am allowed to express.
I also enjoy the fact that I must be hands-on in all aspects of my career, not just making music.
It gives me an opportunity to learn new things and make connections with new people, all while doing something that I love.
I record using a home studio that is set up in my room which consists of only a mic, a stand, pop filter, and condenser.
I usually record myself at home and then send the files off to be mastered.
I enjoy recording and performing the most...
The act of rapping is what I am most invested in!
However, I do enjoy learning about the production of songs as well as learning business marketing strategies that are used to help promote a single or album.
I would describe it as, " A tale of some individuals I've encountered throughout my life, maybe you know someone similar."
I am planning my music releases.
I record multiple songs during a session and then send them off to be mastered.
For now, my goal is to upload at least one song a month!
This will give me enough time to work on future songs as well as ensure enough time to promote whichever track is being released.
Within the next 6 months, I plan to release singles at a steady rate...
At least one a month to gain traction and try to establish a fan base.
My next release will be in August!
And I am currently in the process of trying to contact different organizers to potentially perform!
Yes, there are plans for music videos for every song I will put out!
I am working on a music video for my song "Welcome To Hells Ghetto"...
As of now, I have a visualizer out for my song "Dead Man Walking"...
I have collaborated with some artists I've met online and even have a song out with one of them...
I hope to be able to collab with more people in the future to make connections and to help get my sound heard.
My creative process is inspired by things I see or have experienced in my life, my current mood, or even just words themselves.
I see them as multiple pieces to a giant jigsaw puzzle and try to arrange them in ways that sound engaging, entertaining, and cool!
My drive and determination to be recognized for my talent also inspire the creative process.
My top three albums of all time are...
The Marshall Mathers LP by Eminem
Goblin by Tyler the Creator
And The Low End Theory by A Tribe Called Quest
These albums were influential to me!
My older brother introduced me to the depths of rap music when he showed me A Tribe Called Quest...
I fell in love with the beats and the way the vocals flowed.
I then discovered Eminem later and he quickly became my favorite artist, The Marshall Mathers LP had creative rhyme schemes, unique flows, clever wordplay, and made a huge impact on me.
Tyler the Creators Goblin was an album that I had on repeat throughout high school...
The message of being yourself really spoke to me and I also liked the X-rated and horror themes as well as his edgy punchlines.
Right now my team consists of mainly me, I usually find someone online who is willing to master my tracks.
However, I take my own photos, set up and manage my own social media, and am responsible for promotion, etc.
