We caught up with Jess Rock Novak to talk about her music. At Indiy we champion musicians.

What do you enjoy most about being an independent musician?

Freedom!

The freedom to make my schedule, create music, create videos, present myself a certain way, etc...

That freedom is priceless!

If we were to peek over your shoulder, what does your studio look like? What gear do you typically use?

My home studio is bright, colorful and full of art that I've made, or friends of mine have...It's inspiring!

My gear varies, depending on the task.

For Twitch I use a great Canon camera, XPro mixer, PC laptop and a full musical set up.

And when I'm recording, often I use my iPad and GarageBand.

Do you enjoy recording and production, or do you like performing live and promotion?

Both are fun in different ways!

How would you want people to describe your latest project in a tweet?

"Powerful. fierce. great lyrics"..."Great band!"

Do you plan your music releases, or do you just finish a song and release it?

I usually plan things pretty carefully.

Lately, I've been doing more single releases, which has been cool, and different!

It's a good way to gauge people's reactions to things before putting in a TON of time, effort and money.

What can we expect from you within the next 6 months? Any releases planned? Future gigs?

I'm booking gigs through to the end of 2021 already...so lots of those!

We're also recording a music video this week and I'll be back in the studio in three weeks...

So there will be another release soon!

Plus, I'm releasing a single this weekend!

There's tons of music happening all the time!

Are you planning any videos for your music? Are there any videos we need to know about!?

Ha! Yes! We have just recorded the video for the JNB song, "The Joke"!

It's going to be very different from anything we've ever done...

Absolutely lookout for that!

Are there any collaborations, past or future, that you are excited about?

My boyfriend is recording with his band right now and I play a little bit on that!

He and I play together often, so that's always happening...

But I'd love to get some new collaborations going!

I had started an all-female band last year and I hope to pick that back up soon.

What inspires your creative process?

Life!

Usually it's when I step back from music that I just can't help but jump back in!

I'm inspired by music, art, movies, conversation, friends, etc.

I've always been a keen observer of life, so that's where I get most inspired.

What are your top three favorite albums of all time?

1. No Doubt - Tragic Kingdom
2. Nikka Costa - Can'tneverdidnothin'
3. Allman Brothers - Live at the Fillmore East

Who makes up your existing creative team?
i.e. photographers, video directors, social media managers, paid media specialists, stylists, hair, and makeup…Name someone who you think deserves a special shout-out?

Oh man! I have been so lucky to work with SO many amazing people.

Creatively...Robyn Stockdale, Shannon Fleming, Ashley Miller Hansen, Daniel Ware, Dennis Fernando, Jessica Montgomery and about 100 more incredible artists!

I love that our community here celebrates each other and we all work together to create great things.
