We caught up with Omo Nyame to talk about her music. At Indiy we champion musicians.

What do you enjoy most about being an independent musician?

I love the creative freedom that comes with being an independent artist. There’s not as much pressure to be something I’m not or create music that doesn’t fulfill me - I get to live in my AUTHENTIC truth at all times.

If we were to peek over your shoulder, what does your studio look like? What gear do you typically use?

I started off always going to an outside studio, now I have a studio set up in my home, that not only includes my mic for music, but also my tripod for videos (I’m also a YouTube content creator).

Do you enjoy recording and production, or do you like performing live and promotion?

I definitely enjoy recording and the production aspect of creating, however, performing is my first love hands down.

How would you want people to describe your latest project in a tweet?

“Provokes thought, empowers women - a message much needed for the culture”

Do you plan your music releases, or do you just finish a song and release it?

I’m more of a planner, just because I want to make the largest impact that I can when I do release music.

What can we expect from you within the next 6 months? Any releases planned? Future gigs?

In the next 6 months, you can expect another single release, a solo EP release, as well as a collaborative EP release with my life partner & musician, Chai Tulani.

Are you planning any videos for your music? Are there any videos we need to know about!?

Yes, definitely!! I currently have 4 music videos released to the public:

Visuals are such an important aspect of the story & art form to me, and I definitely plan on releasing more soon.

Are there any collaborations past of future that you are excited about, producers, artists, instrumentalists, or songwriters?

My favorite producer/engineer to collaborate with is Motor City Melo.
He has literally helped to mold me into the artist that I am today and when we work together, it’s like magic. Outside of that, me and my life partner, Chai Tulani have an amazing artistic chemistry and we push each other to new heights when we work together. I’m definitely looking forward to sharing some of the music we’ve been working on for the past few months.

Which artists inspire your creative process?

My creative process is most times inspired by my emotions - emotions that I can’t let go of but have to let out.
I create as a form of therapy and release, so when I am angry, sad, and even newly-in-love, I have the most to express over a beat.

What are your top five favorite albums of all time & why those albums?

To Pimp a Butterfly - Kendrick Lamar
Jim Crow - The Musical
Black Reign - Queen Latifah

All of these projects highlight a different aspect and conversation within myself. They all speak to Black oppression but also Black uplift, and empower the community in a very courageous and authentic way.

Who makes up your existing creative team?
i.e. photographers, video directors, social media managers, paid media specialists, stylists, hair, and makeup…Name someone who you think deserves a special shout out?

My current team exists of myself as the singer, songwriter & emcee, my engineer/producer Motor City Melo, and my videographer and editor, Brandy Smith (from Andy World Productions).
Without these two consistently and generously offering themselves and their gifts for my vision, I don’t know where I would be.

How did you discover indiy.com ? Has it been useful for you? How might we serve you better?

I discovered it through a friend I believe. It has been helpful, especially giving indie artists a chance to be spotlighted for their works.
